Grace regretted the words as soon as they left her mouth. She looked away from Wileyâs shocked expression and took in the beauty of the room. From the soft lighting punctuated with flickering candles to the scent of flowers perfuming the air, she couldnât have asked for a more romantic setup. Calla lilies took center stage in the flower arrangements, not a surprise since Wiley knew they were her favorite.
She had no doubt heâd orchestrated this room and the mood it set. She didnât want to consider what the attention to detail that had gone into it might reveal to the Provisions staffâand more importantly to his sisterâabout the nature of their relationship. Sheâd expect nothing less of her big-city attorney. From food to the little gifts and flowers heâd brought her, it was clear he was a master of thoughtful gestures.
As much as she appreciated being spoiled in this way, what Grace liked best about Wiley was that heâd seemed to believe in her. He hadnât treated her like a child the way her parents tended to. Despite her struggles, he never gave any indication that he thought her incapable of dealing with challenges or making her own decisions.
Until tonight.
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â He shook his head. âIâm not trying to coddle you, Grace.â
âThen why mention to your sister how I need to make recovering my priority as if Iâm not already doing that?â She moved closer to the table. âYou sound like my dad or Jake. I thought you believed I could manage my own life?â
âI do.â
âThatâs not what it sounded like.â She dashed a hand across her cheek, cursing the tears that gathered in her eyes. She didnât want to cry but was working so hard to prove that she could handle everything. The truth was, sometimes she doubted herself. She felt tired and achy and like she wanted to crawl into bed, but she kept going. She wouldnât have the opportunity for the promotion at the hotel taken from her because she wasnât up to the task of it.
âGrace.â He stepped closer, and she wanted to back away, but that wasnât so easy to manage with the scooter. âI know how determined you are to return to the hotel, even though youâre practically managing as much as two people working remotely. But Iâd be lying if I told you I wasnât worried about you.â
Betrayal ripped through her, but he held up a hand before she could speak. âTell me why you havenât contacted the physical therapist my family arranged.â
âHow do you know about that?â she demanded instead of answering, hating to be put on the spot in this way.
âCallum mentioned it,â he said gently. âYou understand that people realize how serious the fall could have been? More serious than it was.â He paused, looked away for moment before his gaze returned to hers. âDeadly.â
âOf course I do.â She squeezed her eyes shut. âAnd I hate it. I hate that people are talking about me or feeling sorry for me.
